Portfolio Element 3
Digital Citizenship
Digital Citizenship is extremely valued at SCE, as we are a Common Sense Certified School and I am a Common Sense Ambassador.
At SCE we deliver Digital Citizenship to students, parents and staff in a variety of ways. For students, we teach the Common Sense Lessons during the Related Arts Technology Rotation using Nearpod. We teach multiple lessons to every grade level covering a variety of technology responsibilities and etiquette. Also, our School Counselors teach responsibility and Digital Citizenship during their Related Arts Rotation.
To reach parents, I host a table during Parent Teacher Conference Night in the Fall and the Spring offering technology advice. This year, my focus has been on Technology Balance for students and parents in the home. (Please find the Media Balance Tips shared with Parents during our Fall Semester Parent Teacher Conference Night below.)
Every Spring Semester, the school counselors and I also host a night for Parents entitled "Parenting in a Cyber World" where we share knowledge and advice from Common Sense Media about current needs and topics their children are either already encountering in their digital lives or will soon encounter. We share information to help parents learn what their child is using, monitor their child's digital lives, and how to open conversations with their children concerning technology. (Please find the link connected above and also below to our Parenting in a Cyber World webpage - simply click on the picture or the blue words above.)
For staff, I share information through emails and by meeting with PLC Teams. I've discussed the importance of password privacy for students as well as teachers, along with social media classroom use. We only encourage the classroom use of Twitter at SCE. I have shared some "good practices" of personal social media posts...."do's and don'ts". I also offer an online Professional Development session on Digital Citizenship through our RCS Online PD Resources.
